UTL Kobs retained their Mak Hime 10’s title with a 24-5 blitz over fancied Kenya Harlequins(Kenya VII’s champions) in the main cup final.Former champions MTN Heathens gathered some silverware this season with a 19-0 defeat of hosts Makerere Impis to win the Plate final,Rhinos won the shield final, while Impis II won the Bowl final. In the ladies final the Thunderbirds blue defeated the Rangers 10-0.
It was indeed a weekend of pacy and dazzling rugby, not even the early morning hail storm on day two of the tournament dampened spirits,in the end UTL Kobs showed why they are now regarded as one of the dominant clubs in East Africa.Such was Kobs superiority they had the 3 top scores in the tournament, with Ugandan international full back Simon Wakabi walking away with the USD 380 staked for the top scorer after he scored 52 points. The highly anticipated main cup finals between Kenya Harlequins and UTL Kobs turned out to be a one sided affair as the visitors could barely get out of their own half.Another Ugandan international lock Adrian Bukenya who had a storming game, opened Kobs account with a powerful run down the flank to crash in and score at the corner flag.ABSA African leopard Allan Musoke then showed why he represents Africa by scoring two superb tries, twice breaking the Kenya Harlequins defence line and showing their cover defence a clean pair of heels. He then set up young fly half Edmond Tumusiime after a mazy run and cross kick the floundering Harlequins defence could only watch as Edmund grounded the ball for the try.Kenya Harlequins got an unconverted consolation try at the hooter, the Kenyans just had no answer to the pace of Kob’s wide men and the few times they attacked they found an uncompromising Kobs defence ready to win back possession with shuddering big hits.
Impis hosts had a poor show at the tournament and lost the plate final 19-0 to a rampant Heathens RFC who can count themselves unlucky when they got knocked out of the main cup by a toss of the coin after a scoreless draw with G4S Pirates.G4S Pirates better known for being a XV’s team put up a good show finally bowing out to UTL Kobs 17-0 in the main cup semi finals, for all their resilience in defence their backs just couldn’t finnish off the chances they got.
As is tradition with the shorter codes of the game on the menu was electrifying pace and showmanship,Impis II’s pint sized fly half Allan Katongole took top honours in the bowl final perfectly executing a series of David Campese like goose steps and completely wrong footing 3 of his markers(one left on his backside) to cross the try line much to the delight of the noisy University section of the crowd.James Gichuru the Impis fly half was voted MVP.
HIMA cement have pledged to continue sponsoring the tournament and together with the organising committee have plans to take the game beyond the regional challenge that it is by inviting clubs from South Africa and the UK in next year’s edition.
