“The tournament was clearly encouraging for African rugby not just because our great ambassadors, the Springboks of South Africa, emerged as world champions but also because the Namibian team performed so well, particularly against Ireland. We congratulate both unions on the work they have done, and the credit they have brought to our entire continent.”
“In their performances, the world could see the giant leap that African rugby has made since 2002, increasing membership from eight to 32 countries and creating a comprehensive structure of competitions from the Africa Cup through Sevens, youth and ladies’ rugby.”
“This structure will move forward in 2008, as we organise the first qualifying matches for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, the Africa Cup, the Castell Cup, Sevens tournaments that will produce three African qualifiers for next year’s Sevens RWC in Dubai, qualifying matches for the Women’s Rugby World Cup and various age-group tournaments.
“It will certainly be a busy year, another year of solid growth for African rugby. We have a good relationship with the IRB, and we appreciate the help they provide. However, we are mindful of the enduring truth: ‘Help yourself and God will help you’.”
“In this regard, we are working hard to secure the future of the African Leopards, our continental tea, because they serve as valuable ambassadors for rugby in Africa. If we can find a new sponsor, the team will be able to accept the invitations we have received.”
