Rugby in Nigeria is set to soar to new heights after the West-African nation finally fulfilled its potential by winning the B-Zone tournament of the Castel Regional Trophy staged in Togo at the end of July. Nigeria beat the hosts by 12 points to 11 in a hard fought contest watched by eight thousand spectators at the Omnisport De Lome Stadium.
Togo enjoyed a first half lead but succumbed to the boot of Nigerian flyhalf Azeez Ladipo kicked four penalties to steer his country to victory and the title. Ghana and the Republic of Benin were the other participating nations in the competition. Nigeria achieved a unique double when their juniors also won the under 18 competition. Nigeria joins the Niger and Reunion in the final four of the CASTEL REGIONAL TROPHY, the Confederation of African Rugby’s second tier championship. The last semi-finalist will be determined after the tournament in Arusha, scheduled for 14 to 19 August.
