SA Amateurs and Nambia start Africa Cup on winning note

Bloemfontein, South Africa : Defending Africa Cup Champions, the SA Amateurs, made a winning start to to the defense of their title when they beat the Zimbabwean Sables by 40 points to eight on Saturday. The match was a curtain raiser for the international between South Africa and England in the Free State capital.

The SA Amateurs led 21-nil at the break after tries by Itumeleng Mogotsi, Reauhin de Bruyn and Albert Buckle. Second half tries by Mogotsi, his second, Rayno Hendricks & Simo Mpungose took the SA Amateurs to a comfortable victory. Zimbabwe responded with a sole penalty and a late try.

In Windhoek, last year’s runners-up, Namibia thrashed Zambia by 83 points to ten. Namibia scored 12 tries including 4 from new flyhalf Justinus van der Westhuizen who added nine conversions for a personal contribution of 38 points. Namibia held a 33-0 lead at half-time after tries by van der Westhuizen, and two apiece from no 8 Jacques Burger and left wing Melrick Africa

The second half produced tries from centre Du Preez Grobler, replacement Corné Powell (2), substitute hooker Cor van Tonder, another two from Van der Westhuizen and one for loose-forward Jacques Niewenhuysen.
