WHY ASHIOYA WAS DROPPED
Sidney Ashioya, the national seven-a-side captain for the last four legs of the 2005/2006 International Rugby Board Sevens Series was dropped from the provisional squad of 21 because of declining a request by the selectors to skip the last two tournaments of the 2006 Nakumatt National Circuit. Newly appointed coach Benjamin Ayimba has explained risked burning out before the team assembles on October 27 to start preparations for the opening two tournaments of the IRB Sevens Circuit in the United Arab Emirates and South Africa .
“He was one of the players advised to skip the last two Nakumatt national seven-a-side circuit tournaments because we felt there was a risk of a burn out. It is impossible to have the players conditioned because the IRB Circuit is demanding and we would not want any player to fall short of the goals that have been set,” Ayimba explained. Ashioya who has been instrumental in the Kenya Harlequin chase for the overall title bowed to pressure from his club.
Although Ayimba cracked the whip, the doors could still be open for the sensational winger because there are still four slots to be filled. “There are players we are looking at who need to show that they can go that extra mile and develop when included in the team,” the coach said. But Ashioya indicated he was still available for the Emirates Airline Dubai seven-a-side tournament in December. “I am only unavailable for the second tournament in George , South Africa ,” he explained.
The player admitted he had been told to skip the last two tournaments but felt his club needed him. “I have a duty to play for the club. The technical bench told me why I was not called up for the provisional squad and I am satisfied,” Ashioya stated.
Ayimba said the technical bench looked at the performance skills, awareness in the field and ability to turn the game around as some of the criteria. Some of the players called up also have specialised skills. “Ng’ong’a is a good passer of the ball and kicks while Collins Kimani is a good kicker also,” Ayimba said.
It is likely that Widnes Vikings Rugby League player Lucas Onyango may be included in the team. The player is expected back home in November. “We have not spoken with him but he is one player we would consider if available,” the coach admitted.
