Amonde and Omondi are named in Kenya team
Story by ERIC ODANGA in London
Andrew Amonde and Ted Omondi have been included in the national seven-a-side team for the last leg of the International Board Rugby World Series seven-a-side tournament in Edinburgh next weekend.
This follows injuries to Edwin Shimenga, Collins Injera, Felix Ochieng and Innocent Simiyu on the opening two days of the Emirates Airline Sevens at Twickenham.
Team manager and coach Oscar Osir made the decision to bring in the two players after a chilly weather in the morning took its toll on Injera, Ochieng’ and Simiyu. Amonde, who is in Uganda with the national rugby team, is expected in Scotland on Wednesday.
The trip to Uganda by Amonde angered Ayimba who posed: “Did he go to Uganda? It is a bit of a mess. He is a non-travelling player. That is what happens when a team is chosen without people taking into consideration the importance. The Uganda game is not as important as winning IRB points. That puts us in a dilemma,” the coach commented.
It was the match against England that took its toll on Kenya. “Many aspects cost us the game against England. The wet conditions put paid to our running game despite stringing good passes and retaining the ball,” Ayimba observed.
He added Kenya had a promising start despite England leading 5-0.
“The rhythm was broken down which affected the psyche of the guys who are already in sync with the game.”
